Good/Bad Composition
Bad Composition
To me, this photo has bad composition because the subject of the photo, the dumpster, is in the center of the frame, putting it "in jail" as described in the lecture. Because the dumpster is in the center of the frame, the viewers eye goes directly to the center of the frame, ignoring the elements in the background. Also, there is no movement in this picture, or variety in the elements in the background, making the photo boring.
In my opinion, this picture has bad composition for many reasons. For one, like the previous photo, the pizza box is in the center of the frame, putting it "in jail" and causing the viewers eye to go directly to the center of the frame. Also, the background of the photo has no variety or movement; it is simply black asphalt. Without interesting elements in the background, the photo lacks depth and appears boring.
Good Composition
To me, this picture demonstrates good composition. The subject of the photo, the pinecone, has dominance in the frame because it is larger than the other elements, allowing variety of size, but, because it is off center, the pinecone is not "in jail" and rather reveals the other images in the background of the photo. Also, the branches in the background allow movement in the frame, and, because there are several branches crossing over each other, there is also variety and repetition in the background.
This photo demonstrates good composition because it is symmetrical. If one was to fold the photo in half, it would be the same on either side, which gives the photo balance. The window also has dominance in the frame, and the many lines in the picture allow movement. Finally, sequence of squares in the window cause repetition, further adding to the good composition of the photo.
